Callow Top Holiday Park, Derbyshire

June and October 2022.

We have been to Callow Top Holiday Park twice as we write this (it is a lovely place to stay!). The first time we visited Callow Top Holiday Park was in June 2022. We picked an amazing weekend weather wise and we were able to take advantage of the outdoor swimming pool, which is a big plus point here. There is a rectangle swimming pool plus a smaller, shallow pool for the younger ones.

On our second visit, we went in October 2022 and the weather wasn’t as kind to us but still plenty to do on-site and in the area.

Callow Top Holiday Park has something for everyone, and even though it is a very large site, it doesn’t feel like it as there is plenty of space. They allow motorhomes, touring caravans, trailer tents and tents (so pretty much everyone is welcome). The place oozes family-friendly vibes with a large play park for the children, games room, outdoor swimming pool, on-site shop, on-site pub that serves food, a games field and a fishing lake.

The location is excellent, if you like walking or cycling, it is very close to the Tissington Trail. On our first visit, we walked into Ashbourne along the trail which was a lovely walk (a little hilly so please be aware of this and not suitable for pushchairs). The little town of Ashbourne is quaint with a variety of bespoke shops and a few eateries, easy to spend an afternoon here.

On our second visit, we travelled to Matlock Bath (approx. 15 minutes by car) and we went to see the Matlock Bath illuminations they have on the lake every year (September and October only). It was a lovely experience and the boats were very pretty – I would recommend visiting this if you are staying here in September or October. The only negative experience we had at the illuminations was the cost of items – £20 for 2 pick and mixes – shock! Don’t let that put you off though, there is plenty to do including a few funfair rides, shops, amusement arcades and fish & chip shops galore.

Back at the holiday park, we booked pitch number 40 both times we stayed, which was close to all the amenities and we could see the play park from our caravan (which we like so we can see our children). The caravan pitches are part hardstanding/part grass and are very spacious. Each pitch is very private having their own bushes around them but you still get the feel of being around others.

We popped into the Callow Inn (the on-site pub) and had a bite to eat and some drinks, it’s a lovely large pub with a friendly atmosphere. In the summer, it overlooks the swimming pool too. I did hear they have entertainment on some weekends but there wasn’t any on when we was there so unable to add any info on this.

Further afield in the local area, you will be within easy reach of Alton Towers Theme Park & Waterpark, The Peak District, Matlock Bath, soft play areas and shops.

We really enjoyed our stay at Callow Top Holiday Park and would highly recommend either a short break or there is plenty to do in the area for longer stays.

We look forward to visiting again soon for a dip in the outdoor pool!
